We love spontaneous piercings at Red Baron Ink. However, walking in does not always mean that every piercing can—or should—be performed immediately.

From wait times and jewelry quality to anatomy checks and safer alternatives, here is what you should know before visiting a walk-in piercing studio.

Can You Walk Into a Piercing Shop Without an Appointment?

Yes. Red Baron Ink welcomes piercing walk-ins whenever availability allows.

Some clients can be seen immediately. Other times, there may be several appointments or walk-ins ahead of you, and the wait could be up to an hour or longer. Every piercing requires proper preparation, jewelry selection, sterilization and enough time for the piercer to assess your anatomy without rushing.

That is why appointments are recommended when you have a specific time you need to be seen. But when the piercing mood strikes unexpectedly, you are still welcome to stop in and check our availability.

And while you wait, you can explore our jewelry, look through the artists’ work or even start planning your next tattoo. This is Red Baron Ink, after all.

Your Anatomy May Determine What You Can Get Pierced

You may walk in completely certain that you want a particular piercing, only to hear the piercer say that your anatomy is not suited for it.

Please do not take that personally.

Certain piercings depend on the shape, depth, movement and structure of the area being pierced. For example, not every navel has the fold and space required to safely support a traditional navel piercing.

When a piercer tells you no, they are not trying to turn away your business. They are trying to prevent problems such as excessive pressure, irritation, migration, rejection or a piercing that never heals correctly.

A skilled piercer may also suggest an alternative. Someone who is not suited for a traditional navel piercing may possibly be considered for a floating navel, depending on their individual anatomy. Different jewelry, placement or another piercing entirely may give you a safer result that still fits the look you want.

Come in with an idea, but let the piercer guide you. The goal is not simply to perform a piercing. The goal is to give you a piercing that has the best possible chance of healing well.

What Should You Look for in a Walk-In Piercing Studio?

Before letting someone pierce your body, take a moment to look around and ask questions.

A professional studio should be willing to explain:

How its equipment and jewelry are sterilized
Whether needles are sterile and single-use
What materials its initial jewelry is made from
How the piercing procedure works
What aftercare will be required
Whether your anatomy is suitable

You may also want to ask whether the piercer is an APP member or whether the studio follows the health and safety guidance published by the Association of Professional Piercers.

APP membership and APP standards are not the same as government licensing or certification. Still, the organization provides widely used guidance for choosing a clean, responsible piercing environment, and its members must meet documented requirements.

What Kind of Jewelry Should a Piercing Shop Use?

The material placed into a fresh piercing matters.

At Red Baron Ink, we use quality titanium and appropriate gold jewelry for initial piercings. These materials are selected to help reduce unnecessary irritation and sensitivity while supporting the healing process.

Implant-grade titanium

Implant-grade titanium is lightweight, durable and commonly selected for fresh piercings. However, the word “titanium” by itself is not enough. Quality jewelry should meet recognized material standards and should be properly manufactured and polished.

Gold

Gold can also be appropriate when it is solid, high quality and made in a suitable alloy for body jewelry. Gold-plated and gold-filled pieces are not the same as solid gold and should not be used as jewelry for a fresh piercing.

What about surgical steel?

“Surgical steel” is a broad marketing term. Some implant-grade steel can meet standards for initial piercing jewelry, but not every piece labeled surgical steel has the same composition, documentation or quality. That is why the specific grade and manufacturer matter more than the words on the packaging.

What about sterling silver?

Sterling silver is popular for fashion jewelry, but it is not considered appropriate for a new or unhealed piercing. It may tarnish and is not intended to remain inside fresh healing tissue.

Your initial jewelry should also be smooth, properly sized and designed for body piercing. Internally threaded or threadless jewelry prevents rough external threading from passing through fresh tissue.

How Long Will a Walk-In Piercing Take?

Once you are with the piercer, the actual piercing itself may be quick. The appointment involves more than the moment the needle passes through the skin, though.

Before You Walk In

Eat a proper meal, drink water and bring valid identification. Avoid arriving intoxicated or under the influence of anything that may interfere with your judgment, consent or ability to follow instructions.

Minors must meet our age requirements and arrive with a parent or legal guardian carrying the required identification and documentation. Contact the shop before visiting with a minor so you know exactly what to bring.

You should also budget for both the piercing service and the jewelry. The piercing fee does not include the cost of jewelry, and the final price will depend on the material and style you select.
