“Can I get my nostril pierced with a hoop instead of a stud?”
The short answer is no—we do not perform fresh nostril piercings with hoops.
While we completely understand why so many people love the look of a hoop, starting your nostril piercing with the proper jewelry gives your body the best chance to heal comfortably and reduces the risk of unnecessary complications.
Why We Start Every Nostril Piercing With a Flat-Back Stud
A new nostril piercing naturally swells during the first few weeks of healing. Because of this, we use a flat-back labret stud instead of a hoop.
Your initial jewelry consists of two pieces:
- The post: The part that passes through your nostril. We intentionally use a slightly longer post during the initial healing period to leave room for normal swelling.
- The decorative top: This screws or threads into the post and is the visible piece of jewelry you choose.
As your nose piercing heals and the swelling goes down, you’ll come back to the studio for a quick downsizing appointment. During this visit, we’ll replace the longer post with a shorter one that fits your healed anatomy much better.
Downsizing your jewelry helps reduce unnecessary movement, improves comfort, and creates a cleaner, more secure fit.
Why Can’t You Pierce a Nose With a Hoop?
Many people picture a snug hoop when they think of a nostril piercing, but that snug fit is exactly why hoops aren’t recommended for fresh piercings.
A hoop has to rotate every time you smile, wash your face, sleep, or accidentally bump your nose. That constant movement can repeatedly irritate healing tissue.
More importantly, the snug look that most people want doesn’t leave enough room for the natural swelling that occurs after getting your nose pierced.
Starting with a hoop can increase the risk of:
- Excessive swelling
- Irritation from constant jewelry movement
- Jewelry embedding into swollen tissue
- Delayed healing
- Bumps and prolonged discomfort

Many people think their piercing is healed because the outside looks good, but the inside of the piercing is often still healing. Changing your jewelry too early can cause irritation and set your healing back.
That’s why we always recommend waiting until your piercer confirms your piercing is ready before making the switch. Nostril piercings commonly take six months or longer to fully heal.
