The Truth About Copying Tattoos: Why Custom Designs Matter

Why We Don’t Copy Tattoos (And Why You Shouldn’t Either)

At Red Baron Ink, one of the questions we get asked fairly often is:

“Can you copy this tattoo exactly?”

The short answer? Usually, no.

Not because we don’t have the ability to do it. Quite the opposite.

Our artists are incredibly talented, creative professionals with backgrounds in fine art, illustration, design, and years of tattoo experience. We know we can recreate almost anything—but most of the time, we choose not to.

Here’s why.

Tattoos Are Art — And Artists Deserve Credit

Behind every tattoo design is an artist.

Somebody sat down, sketched, revised, developed a concept, and turned an idea into artwork. Whether that artist tattoos professionally or simply creates artwork privately, we believe creative work deserves respect.

If somebody brings in another artist’s tattoo and wants an exact replica, our first question is:

Do you have permission?

If the original artist created the piece and has approved reproduction—or if it’s a well-known historical or famous work where proper credit can be given—we’re happy to discuss options.

But copying another artist’s custom work without acknowledgment isn’t something we believe supports the tattoo community.

Your Tattoo Should Be Yours

There is something special about tattoos.

Unlike a shirt, a bag, or a pair of shoes—you wear this forever.

Your fingerprints are unique.

Your story is unique.

Why shouldn’t your tattoo be unique too?

We believe tattoos become more meaningful when they’re created specifically for the person wearing them.

Instead of copying someone else’s exact tattoo, we prefer to ask:

What do you love about this piece?

Is it the composition? The flowers? The mood? The placement? The style?

Once we understand that, our artists create something inspired by that feeling—but built specifically for you.

Custom Tattoos Usually Age Better Emotionally

A copied tattoo often starts as:

“I loved theirs.”

But years later?

The tattoos people tend to love the most are the ones connected to their own story.

Custom work gives room for:

  • Better placement
  • Better sizing
  • Better flow with your anatomy
  • More personal meaning
  • A design nobody else has

Inspiration Is Always Welcome

This doesn’t mean you can’t bring references.

Please do.

Pinterest boards, screenshots, old artwork, colors, textures, tattoos you admire—we love references.

References help us understand your vision.

But our goal is to create something inspired by those ideas—not reproduce someone else’s work line for line.

At Red Baron Ink, We Create—Not Copy

Our studio was built around creativity.

Our artists are not tracing machines.

They’re creators.

If you come to us with an idea, a memory, a style, or even just a feeling—we’ll work together to turn it into something that belongs to you.

Because tattoos should tell your story.

Not somebody else’s.
