Orbital Piercing: Jewelry, Healing & Aftercare
An orbital piercing consists of two piercing holes connected by a single piece of jewelry, creating a distinctive circular or curved look. Because both piercings need to align properly for one piece of jewelry, anatomy, placement, spacing, and jewelry fit are especially important. Our professional piercers will evaluate your ear and help determine whether an orbital piercing is appropriate for your anatomy and the look you want to create.
Orbital Piercing Placement
Before piercing, your piercer will evaluate the area and carefully plan both piercing points. The angle and spacing need to work together so the jewelry can sit comfortably without creating unnecessary pressure on either piercing.
Orbital piercings can be incorporated into different areas of the ear depending on anatomy. If the placement you have in mind isn’t suitable, your piercer can discuss alternative options that may create a similar look while working better with your ear.
Jewelry for an Orbital Piercing
At Red Baron Ink, we use high-quality implant-grade titanium and solid 14k or 18k gold jewelry. The appropriate jewelry style, diameter, gauge, and fit will depend on your anatomy and the placement of the piercing.
Because a single piece of jewelry connects two piercing points, proper sizing is especially important. Your piercer will select jewelry that works with your anatomy and allows the piercings to heal without unnecessary pressure or movement.
Orbital Piercing Healing
An orbital piercing requires patience because two piercing channels are healing together. Some initial tenderness, swelling, mild bruising, or light crusting can be normal. Even if the area begins to look healed on the outside, the tissue inside may still be fragile.
Avoid unnecessary pressure, friction, and snagging while your orbital piercing heals. Be mindful of sleeping on the pierced ear, headphones, phones, hats, hair, and anything else that may put pressure on or catch the jewelry.
Orbital Piercing Aftercare
Wash your hands before touching your piercing and otherwise leave the jewelry alone as much as possible. Gently rinse the area with sterile saline wound wash containing 0.9% sodium chloride and dry with a clean disposable product.
Do not twist, spin, or rotate the jewelry. Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, harsh soaps, ointments, and unnecessary personal-care products around the healing piercing.
If the jewelry needs to be adjusted or changed during healing, have the change performed by a professional piercer.
