Tongue Piercing Placement

Every tongue is different, which is why an anatomy assessment is an important first step. Your piercer will evaluate the tongue, surrounding tissue, and placement before moving forward.

Proper positioning is important for both comfort and oral health. The goal is to select a placement that works with your individual anatomy while minimizing unnecessary contact between the jewelry, teeth, and gums.

Jewelry for a Tongue Piercing

Tongue piercings are typically started with a straight barbell that provides additional room for initial swelling. At Red Baron Ink, we use high-quality implant-grade titanium and solid 14k or 18k gold jewelry appropriate for professional piercing.

Once the initial swelling has subsided, the longer barbell should be downsized by a professional piercer. Properly fitted jewelry helps reduce excessive movement and unnecessary contact with the teeth, gums, and other oral structures.

Healing & Downsizing

• Swelling, tenderness, light bleeding, or bruising can be normal during the first several days after a tongue piercing. The piercing may begin to feel comfortable before the tissue has completely healed, so continue following your aftercare routine even if the piercing feels fine.

  Downsizing is an important part of the healing process. Once the initial swelling has decreased, return to your piercer so the longer initial barbell can be replaced with properly fitted jewelry. Avoid changing the jewelry yourself while the piercing is still healing.

Tongue Piercing Aftercare

Good oral hygiene is especially important while a tongue piercing heals. Wash your hands before touching the jewelry, brush and floss regularly, and keep both your mouth and jewelry clean. Rinse thoroughly with clean water after eating or drinking.

Avoid unnecessarily playing with, clicking, or moving the jewelry against your teeth and gums. During the initial healing period, be mindful of activities that may irritate the piercing, and follow the personalized aftercare instructions provided by your piercer.
