Bridge Piercing: Jewelry, Healing & Aftercare

A bridge piercing is a horizontal facial piercing placed through the skin at the bridge of the nose, typically between the eyes. Because the amount of available tissue and facial anatomy vary from person to person, not everyone is suited for this piercing. Our professional piercers will evaluate your anatomy, discuss placement, and determine whether a bridge piercing is appropriate for you.

Bridge Piercing Placement

Proper placement is especially important with a bridge piercing. Before piercing, your piercer will evaluate the tissue at the bridge of your nose and carefully mark the placement so you can review the position and symmetry together.

Because bridge piercings are surface piercings, they can be more susceptible to migration or rejection than some other piercings. Appropriate anatomy, placement, jewelry fit, and minimizing unnecessary pressure or movement all play an important role in healing.

Jewelry for a Bridge Piercing

Bridge piercings are typically fitted with a properly sized straight barbell. At Red Baron Ink, we use high-quality implant-grade titanium and solid 14k or 18k gold jewelry.

Initial jewelry is selected based on your anatomy and sized to accommodate normal swelling. Once swelling has subsided, your piercer may recommend downsizing to a shorter bar for a more appropriate fit. Jewelry changes during healing should be performed by a professional piercer.

Bridge Piercing Healing

Some initial tenderness, swelling, mild bruising, or light crusting can be normal during healing. Because a bridge piercing sits relatively close to the surface of the skin, it is important to monitor the area for changes in placement or signs of migration.

Avoid unnecessary pressure, friction, snagging, and movement around the piercing. Be especially mindful of eyeglasses, sunglasses, towels, clothing, skincare products, makeup, and anything else that may regularly come into contact with the area.

Bridge Piercing Aftercare

Wash your hands before touching your piercing and otherwise leave the jewelry alone as much as possible. Gently rinse the area with sterile saline wound wash containing 0.9% sodium chloride and dry with a clean disposable product.

Do not twist, spin, or rotate the jewelry. Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, harsh soaps, ointments, makeup, skincare products, and unnecessary pressure around the healing piercing.

If you notice significant changes in placement, thinning tissue, or increased visibility of the jewelry beneath the skin, have the piercing evaluated by a professional piercer.
