Cartilage Piercing Placement
Unlike the softer tissue of the earlobe, cartilage is firmer and requires careful placement and proper jewelry to support healthy healing. Your piercer will evaluate the shape and structure of your ear before recommending a placement.
Cartilage placements can include areas such as the helix, forward helix, conch, rook, tragus, and other anatomy-dependent locations. If you’re planning multiple piercings, we can also help you consider spacing, jewelry, and how each placement will work together as part of a curated ear.
Jewelry for Cartilage Piercings
At Red Baron Ink, we use high-quality implant-grade titanium and solid 14k or 18k gold jewelry. Initial jewelry is selected based on your anatomy, piercing placement, and the amount of room needed to accommodate swelling during the early stages of healing.
As swelling decreases, your piercer may recommend downsizing to a shorter post. Once your piercing is fully healed, you can explore additional jewelry and styling options, including minimal pieces, decorative gold designs, gemstones, and coordinated jewelry for a curated ear.
Cartilage Piercing Healing
Cartilage piercings require patience and generally take longer to heal than earlobe piercings. Your piercing may look or feel healed on the outside while the tissue inside is still healing, so avoid changing jewelry prematurely.
Pressure and friction can cause unnecessary irritation. Avoid sleeping directly on the healing piercing and be mindful of headphones, phones, eyeglasses, hats, hair, and anything else that may snag or put pressure on the jewelry.
Cartilage Piercing Aftercare
Wash your hands before touching your piercing and otherwise leave it alone as much as possible. Gently rinse the area with sterile saline wound wash containing 0.9% sodium chloride and dry with a clean disposable product.
Do not twist, spin, or rotate your jewelry. Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, harsh soaps, ointments, and homemade salt mixtures. Keep pillowcases, phones, headphones, eyeglasses, hats, and other items that regularly come into contact with your ear clean.
If your jewelry needs to be downsized or adjusted during healing, have the change performed by a professional piercer.
