Forward Helix Piercing: Jewelry, Healing & Aftercare
A forward helix piercing is placed through the cartilage at the front of the upper ear, near where the ear meets the head. It can be worn as a single piercing or styled as a double or triple forward helix when anatomy allows. Because this area varies significantly from person to person, our piercers will evaluate your anatomy, discuss placement, and help you choose jewelry that complements your ear and overall style.

Proper placement is especially important with a forward helix piercing. Your piercer will evaluate the shape and available space of your ear to determine the best angle and placement for your anatomy.
If you’re considering multiple forward helix piercings, your piercer can also help plan the spacing and jewelry so the piercings work together as part of a curated ear. Not everyone has the anatomy for every placement, so the final recommendation will be based on your individual ear.
Jewelry for a Forward Helix Piercing
At Red Baron Ink, we use high-quality implant-grade titanium and solid 14k or 18k gold jewelry. For a fresh forward helix piercing, jewelry should be properly fitted to accommodate initial swelling while supporting comfortable healing.
Once the initial swelling has subsided, your piercer may recommend downsizing to a shorter post. After the piercing is fully healed, you can explore additional jewelry and styling options, from minimal pieces to decorative gold and gemstone designs.
Forward Helix Healing
Forward helix piercings pass through cartilage, so healing requires patience. Some tenderness, swelling, mild bruising, or light crusting can be normal during the healing process. A piercing may look healed on the outside before the tissue inside has completely healed.
Avoid unnecessary pressure and friction while it heals. Be especially mindful of sleeping on the pierced ear, headphones, phones, eyeglasses, hats, hair, and anything else that may snag or put pressure on the jewelry.
Forward Helix Aftercare
Wash your hands before touching your piercing and otherwise leave it alone as much as possible. Gently rinse the piercing with sterile saline wound wash containing 0.9% sodium chloride and dry with a clean disposable product.
Do not twist, spin, or rotate the jewelry. Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, harsh soaps, ointments, and homemade salt mixtures. Keep pillowcases, phones, headphones, eyeglasses, hats, and other items that regularly come into contact with your ear clean.
If your jewelry needs to be downsized or adjusted during healing, have the change performed by a professional piercer.
